Members of the National Association of Mathematicians and Physicists (NAMP), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, chapter, recently hosted the 25th National congress of the association.
Themed, “Mathematical Science as a Panacea to Security Challenges, The Nigeria Example,” the event was held at the university’s permanent site, where mathematicians and physicists brainstormed over the security challenges the country is facing at the moment.
Over 300 delegates from across the country were at the congress, among which were students and lecturers.
In his opening address, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Saburi Adesanya, charged the delegates with the responsibility of getting a mathematical model for solving security challenges in the country.
Professor Adesanya also unveiled the NAMP journal, which according to the NAMP executive is the only journal in Nigeria that is produced four times a year with about 500 t0 600 pages.
In a speech delivered by Professor Sola Adeniran, a representative of the Director-General of the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja, he said it is the best time to discuss the theme because of the security challenges being faced in Nigeria and in Africa as a whole.
Professor Adeniran cited several attacks being carried out by the Boko Haram insurgents, adding that the major problem we have in Nigeria is seeking external support.
According to him, the only solution is for Nigerian mathematicians, physicists, military personnel and policy makers to work hand in hand.
Speaking with Campusbeats, Dr Adebayo Agunbiade, the Head, Department of Mathematics, OOU, said: “The idea for the theme was influenced by the boiling issues of insecurity in Nigeria.
